POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN MALAYSIA

Introduction

Postgraduate study is significantly important when you aim to reposition your career or to begin scientific research. For an added competitive advantage you may choose to go abroad to study. Studying abroad can be a wonderful experience and Malaysia is fast becoming a preferred choice of international students for postgraduate studies.

Malaysian Providers of Postgraduate Qualifications & Quality Assurance

Malaysian public universities, private universities as well as private colleges offer postgraduate studies to local and international students. The quality of the programmes conducted is assured by the national quality assurance agency namely, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), which was established under the Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007.

Why Many International Students Pursue Postgraduate Studies in Malaysia?

Malaysia is a land of opportunities where postgraduate studies are concerned. Malaysia has embarked on an aggressive pursuit of telemedicine, online information services, electronic commerce, digital broadcasting and many other booming industries. The Malaysian government has also launched biotechnology initiatives on a big scale in terms of research and development.

Acquiring a Postgraduate Qualification

Generally, there are three modes of acquiring a postgraduate qualification and each depends on the students needs and the providers requirements.

General Entry Requirements

The following entry requirements serve as a guide to students wishing to apply for various postgraduate programmes.

Duration of Study

Postgraduate students may choose to pursue a full or part-time programme. However, some universities require students to fulfill a residential requirement, for example, one semester for the Master of Philosophy programme and two semesters for the Doctor of Philosophy programme.

MBA & Cost of Study

A popular programme, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Malaysia is offered by Malaysian universities, foreign university branch campuses (such as the University of Nottingham), and other reputable foreign universities partnered with Malaysian institutions.

How to Apply?

There is no centralised postgraduate application agency in Malaysia. As such, you need to apply directly to the individual universities or colleges using an application form or via their websites (if available online). You can apply to more than one university. PhDs and MPhils courses usually do not have fixed entry dates.

Funding for Postgraduate Programmes

Grants are usually available for postgraduate studies, but these will depend very much on the institutions and also on the classes of the first degree, especially for research degrees. The university you apply to may have set aside some grants for specific research projects.

Malaysian Government Scholarships for International Students

The Malaysian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan are awarded by the Malaysian Government to nominated students from the Commonwealth countries to study at postgraduate level in Malaysia.

Conclusion

Malaysia, with its abundant natural resources, biodiversity as well as a conducive study environment, offers a lot of opportunities for research and postgraduate studies.
