The teaching format will generally include lectures (face-to-face and e-learning), supplemented by field visits, on site discussions, case studies and self-directed learning. The Core Modules will be taught in Semesters 1 and 2 and the Elective Modules in Semesters 2 and 3. The Research Module will extend across Semesters 1, 2 and 3. It is an innovative curriculum therefore it will highlight the importance of various pollutants (outdoor and indoor air quality / water quality) on human health. It will introduce current methods for assessing health impacts and appropriate intervention strategies to regulate and improve environmental health. This would enable innovations in the management of environmental pollution. For Selectives / Electives There is a selective option for students to study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Programme on Occupation Health and other relevant elective modules on environmental health The curriculum is reviewed periodically and is subject to change. Course Description | Postgraduate research forms a major and expanding part of the IMU’s academic development. Working for a research degree gives students the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of a discipline and to become familiar with current techniques and methodologies. The Faculty has high teaching standards and attracts first-class teaching staff from Malaysia and abroad. It prides itself of the facilities and support it gives to students and on the calibre and dedication of its academic and clinical staff. The Faculty fosters a broad range of active research programmes in its campuses in Bukit Jalil and Seremban. Much of its success in research and teaching results from the Faculty’s capacity to attract external research funds. The IMU faculty has strong national and international connections and is involved in collaborative projects with other leading medical research institutions. Many staff have made major international contributions in their respective fields and are very experienced in supervising postgraduate students. Today, more than RM1 million internal funds have been allocated for research every year. Research activities have increased substantially, especially in externally-funded collaborative research projects. IMU was designated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI), as a private university that is allowed to apply directly for and receive research funds. Our researchers have received funding for collaborative research projects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer, infectious diseases and environmental health. Other external funding agencies of IMU are Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education, MAKNA, Toray Foundation and many other private research institutions. In 2011, IMU received 21 externally sponsored projects amounting to RM1,465,465 and produced 212 publication of which 116 were in ISI journals with a total Imparct Factor (IF) of 274.029. | ||||

Course Description | The IMU Master of Science in Molecular Medicine is a postgraduate programme that is designed for graduates seeking conceptually clear, personally engaging, and intellectually substantive advanced training in the field of molecular medicine. The impact of molecular medicine is indeed astounding and immense. For instance, in developing therapeutics for breast cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and infectious diseases, a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, pharmacists and medical experts in IMU is designing novel analogs of bioactive compounds from their natural counterparts through computer-aided drug design. The use of genomic screen, bioinformatics and chemoinformatics enable our experts to select drug analogs that are highly specific and individualised. Metabolomics studies are done to elucidate the possible metabolites derived from the drugs as well as their possible toxicity. Our formulation experts make use of advanced nanodelivery materials such as functionalised nanocapsules and carbon nanotubes to enhance the bioavailability of drugs. This programme aims to deliver an exceptional curriculum that is impactful and transformative, one that endows students with skills that are credible and transferable in order to meet the highest demands and expectations of scientific rigours. The curriculum is designed with innovations in mind drawing from the expertise of our world-renowned faculty who are also passionate researchers. The core modules in this programme prepare students for the hands-on research experience that is led by our experts. The comprehensive and outcome-based nature of the core modules encompass the latest scientific developments in molecular medicine that are delivered through innovative andragogy. Students will appreciate the intricate and revealing marvel of molecules in human diseases and be astounded by the ways in which systems biology, computational biology and chemical genetics have transformed the research strategy and methodology in stem cell technology and therapeutics, drug design and development as well as medical and clinical research. The outcomes of this programme will provide a clear map in guiding graduates through the rugged terrain of competing theoretical and practical frameworks in the ever-evolving scientific landscape of molecular medicine. Upon completion of this programme, vast and rewarding career paths are available as graduates enter employment as clinical scientists or research scientists in academia, research institutes or industries worldwide. Graduates may also continue their education as PhD students at IMU or elsewhere. The IMU MSc Molecular Medicine programme welcomes graduates with basic degrees in Medicine, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Course Description | The Master of Pharmacy Practice is designed to extend the pharmacists’ knowledge and skills and aims to develop an informed appreciation of current and future roles in various areas of pharmacy practice including hospitals, community pharmacies, pharmaceutical industries, academia, regulatory bodies, and research organisations with better career opportunities. The Master of Pharmacy Practice (MPP) degree programme offered by IMU is unique and the first of its kind offered by a Malaysian private institution to local as well as international students. There will be three areas of specialisation offered namely Clinical Pharmacy, Social & Administrative Pharmacy, and Pharmacy Management. The areas of specialisation can be chosen based on the graduate students’ preference and according to their career needs in the future. The development of this Master of Pharmacy Practice degree programme also takes into consideration the needs of the practising pharmacist at the moment: a) the need to obtain a post graduate qualification b) the need to upgrade and specialise in the new areas of pharmacy
