Course Description

The IMU Master of Science in Molecular Medicine is a postgraduate programme that is designed for graduates seeking conceptually clear, personally engaging, and intellectually substantive advanced training in the field of molecular medicine. The impact of molecular medicine is indeed astounding and immense. For instance, in developing therapeutics for breast cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and infectious diseases, a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, pharmacists and medical experts in IMU is designing novel analogs of bioactive compounds from their natural counterparts through computer-aided drug design. The use of genomic screen, bioinformatics and chemoinformatics enable our experts to select drug analogs that are highly specific and individualised. Metabolomics studies are done to elucidate the possible metabolites derived from the drugs as well as their possible toxicity. Our formulation experts make use of advanced nanodelivery materials such as functionalised nanocapsules and carbon nanotubes to enhance the bioavailability of drugs.

This programme aims to deliver an exceptional curriculum that is impactful and transformative, one that endows students with skills that are credible and transferable in order to meet the highest demands and expectations of scientific rigours. The curriculum is designed with innovations in mind drawing from the expertise of our world-renowned faculty who are also passionate researchers. The core modules in this programme prepare students for the hands-on research experience that is led by our experts. The comprehensive and outcome-based nature of the core modules encompass the latest scientific developments in molecular medicine that are delivered through innovative andragogy. Students will appreciate the intricate and revealing marvel of molecules in human diseases and be astounded by the ways in which systems biology, computational biology and chemical genetics have transformed the research strategy and methodology in stem cell technology and therapeutics, drug design and development as well as medical and clinical research.

The outcomes of this programme will provide a clear map in guiding graduates through the rugged terrain of competing theoretical and practical frameworks in the ever-evolving scientific landscape of molecular medicine. Upon completion of this programme, vast and rewarding career paths are available as graduates enter employment as clinical scientists or research scientists in academia, research institutes or industries worldwide. Graduates may also continue their education as PhD students at IMU or elsewhere. The IMU MSc Molecular Medicine programme welcomes graduates with basic degrees in Medicine, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biomedical and Health Sciences.
