Careers in communications and broadcasting involve disseminating news, information and entertainment through a variety of media platforms to the public. These include using the spoken and written word, sound and pictures to create content for traditional media like newspapers, magazines, television, film and radio; as well as new media which includes websites, online video/audio streams, social media, blogs, web-based advertisements, and more.

Most communication and broadcasting graduates typically enter careers in the media, cultural and creative industries. Areas of work include television and radio, film and video, digital media, computer games, journalism, writing and publishing, PR and media practice.

The types of companies or organisations that hire include marketing organisations, media companies, communications agencies, the newspaper industry, PR consultancies, publishing companies, and video production, TV and radio companies. Tips on how to get a head start in communication and broadcasting careers

  • Complete more than one internship if possible; it will help you break into the field of electronic media and broadcasting.
  • If you can’t do multiple internships, consider shadowing someone at their workplace as a means through which to gain information, develop contacts, and build mentoring relationships.
  • Develop excellent computer and technical skills, especially internet proficiency and knowledge.
  • Participate in drama, debate, public speaking, music, or athletics – this helps demonstrate talent as well as ability to handle pressure.
  • Good skills to have: curiosity, confidence, assertiveness, creativity, initiative, organisational skills, competitive spirit, enthusiasm, persistence, and diplomacy.
  • If you want a frontline job, you need to show talent for public performance and appearance such as a sense of humour, verbal and written communication skills, showmanship, and an outgoing personality.
  • Be willing to start at the bottom doing entry level tasks before moving up to larger markets or organisations.
  • Understand that geographic flexibility and a willingness to relocate are important in finding job opportunities.
  • Find out as much as you can about different aspects of the industry and stay up-to-date with what’s current.
