General MBA
The General MBA programme is designed to provide an advanced
course in management for professionals and executives seeking
senior positions in industry, commerce and public services. The core
subjects of the MBA are aimed at developing knowledge and skills in
fundamental management disciplines.
The elective subjects permit course members to concentrate in-depth
on more specific subjects according to individual interests and
career choices. The programme involves participation in group work
with course members from many different industrial, commercial,
geographical and cultural backgrounds, and is aimed at improving
the decision-making abilities of participants and producing managers
of the highest quality.
Programme Structure
The General MBA programme consists of 7 core modules which are
compulsory for all candidates, 5 elective modules, and a dissertation
or management project. Each module is normally examined by
coursework and/or a written examination held after the end of the
relevant semester. Candidates will normally be required to follow a
full-time course of study of 1 year or a part-time course of study over
a 2-4 year period.
Core Modules (70 credits)
All students are required to complete the following core modules
(10 credits each). Six modules will be taught in the first semester
(September to December), and one (marked ‘2’) will be taught in
the second Semester (January to May). Modules marked ‘B’ will be
taught as block modules over 12 days.

In addition to the core modules, a further 50 credits (5 modules) must

Dissertation / Individual
or Group Management Project (60 credits)
Course members are required to prepare an individual dissertation
or individual/group management project of approximately 20,000
words. Group management project participants must submit an
additional 10,000-word individual report. The School encourages
participants to pursue a wide range of topic areas. Members of staff
are available to supervise dissertations that fall within their subject
area. Alternatively, they may suggest topics related to areas in
which they have specific interest and expertise. The objective of the
dissertation/management project is to enable course participants to
demonstrate their understanding of, and ability to use, techniques
and methods of analysis that lie broadly within the scope of the MBA
course, and to provide them with the opportunity to significantly
develop their business and management skills.
Requirements for Admission
Applicants must normally be graduates of an approved university
holding an honours degree (preferably with at least a second class
upper qualification, or GPA 3.2) or a relevant professional qualification
deemed equivalent to a first degree. Other equivalent qualifications
will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants are required to have at least three years’ of full-time working experience, usually in a managerial capacity, the majority or all of which will have been gained since graduating from their first degree or relevant qualification. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.
Mature applicants without the minimum academic qualifications who have successfully completed professional qualifications and have several years of senior management experience may also apply.
English Language Requirement
- An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 7.0, with no less than 6.0 in any element of the test; or
- A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 600 in the paper-based TOEFL with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least of 4.0 together with a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) of at least 580 with an Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score of at least 4.0.
