EXPLORING ACADEMIC PATHWAYS AT APU AFTER SPM

June 3, 2024 | Campus News

APU’s Foundation Programme equips students with the skills and confidence to excel in their chosen fields.

TAKING the next step in their academic journey can be both exhilarating and daunting for students who have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

The Foundation programme at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) is designed to cater to the diverse needs and aspirations of these students, ensuring they are well-prepared for their academic and professional futures.

Diverse fields

APU’s School of Foundation head, Dr Sarvinder Kaur emphasises the critical role the foundation programme plays in facilitating a smooth transition to university life.

“Recognising that students fresh out of SPM may still be uncertain about their future career paths, APU offers a comprehensive and flexible curriculum designed to meet their diverse needs.

“This curriculum introduces students to a wide range of fundamental subjects, allowing them to explore different fields and gain a deeper understanding of their interests and strengths before committing to a specific major,” she adds.

This exploratory approach, she says, helps students make informed decisions about their academic futures, and equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen fields.

The foundation programmes offered at APU, include:

  • Business, finance and psychology: Students gain a solid foundation in these three areas to prepare for diverse careers in the corporate world, financial sector, and psychological services.
  • Computing and technology: The basics of programming, information systems, and digital innovation are emphasised to prepare for advanced studies in information technology (IT), software development, and emerging technologies.
  • Engineering: A strong foundation in engineering, mathematics, and physics prepare students for further study in electrical and electronic, mechatronic, and mechanical engineering.
  • Architecture and design: Students learn the basics of visual communication, digital media, architecture and built environment, and creative thinking to prepare for advanced studies in graphic, multimedia, and industrial design.

Comprehensive modules

The Foundation programmes at APU are designed to develop essential study skills, introduce students to the expectations of their future degrees, and allow them to explore various academic disciplines.

These degrees range from visual arts and engineering, to architecture and design, business and finance-related fields, media and communication studies, psychology, tourism and hospitality as well as game design and computing.

For students with clear career goals, tailored modules guide them toward specific degree programmes, while those still exploring their options benefit from common modules that help them determine their strengths and interests.

Flexibility and exploration

One of the key strengths of APU’s Foundation programme is its flexibility, which empowers students to explore various academic disciplines.

Dr Sarvinder says this is crucial as it allows students to switch from one route to another if they discover new interests or strengths during their foundation year.

“This exploratory phase is accompanied by dedicated support and guidance, helping students gain a clear understanding of their potential academic and career paths,” she notes.

Computing the future

APU also offers a Foundation in Computing via open distance learning (ODL).

This programme, conducted 100% online, emphasises flexibility and accessibility, integrating essential skill-based modules including English proficiency, personal skills enhancement as well as research skills development.

This programme stands out for its dynamic weekly live sessions with experienced lecturers, fostering a supportive learning environment. By leveraging APU’s vast digital library content, students also have a wealth of resources at their fingertips.

Additionally, a dedicated help desk and programme leader provides guidance and assistance, making the ODL experience seamless and enriching.

The programme also integrates synchronous and asynchronous learning modalities, encouraging students to actively participate in real-time interactions with peers and lecturers while providing the flexibility to progress at their own pace.

Leveraging cutting-edge technology, and a robust platform supporting both synchronous and asynchronous modes of teaching, APU fosters engaging learning experiences replicating the immersive classroom environment and ensuring a dynamic learning experience.

Empowering excellence

The Foundation programme at APU, says Dr Sarvinder, serves as a launching pad for SPM graduates, offering a multifaceted approach to academic and professional development.

APU, with its diverse array of pathways, she notes, provides students with a tailored curriculum that caters to individual interests and learning styles.

“With a dedicated team of experienced educators and a robust support system in place, APU creates a nurturing environment where students can explore their passions, discover new interests, and realise their full potential.

“Whether opting for the traditional campus experience or embracing the flexibility of the ODL programme, students at APU are empowered to excel academically and thrive in their future endeavours,” she emphasises.
