MIA Awards Scholarships to Budding Young Artists at the 31st Nationwide Art & Design Competition

Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) successfully held the final round of its 31th Nationwide Art & Design Competition 2016 recently. Scholarships worth more than RM300,000 were awarded to the winners of the competition to pursue their studies in any of the 6 art and design Diploma programmes offered at MIA, which include Interior Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Fine Art, Textile & Fashion Design and Industrial Design. A total of 80 contestants from various secondary schools were shortlisted for the finals.

Skills of the finalists were further tested during the on-the-spot competition where the panel of judges selected 13 finalists to be awarded a scholarship. The top 10 winners won full scholarships (valued at RM27,000) as well as RM1000 cash prize. The 3 other selected finalists were awarded half-scholarships (valued at RM13,500) coupled with cash prize of RM500. All the other finalists were presented a consolation prize.

For this year’s competition, 4 interesting topics have been set for the preliminary round. The topics are Memorable Moments of My Childhood (Kenangan Istimewa Zaman Kanak-kanak Saya), Year 2015 In Review (Imbas Kembali Tahun 2015), Futuristic City (Bandar Futuristik) and Cultural Heritage of Malaysia (Warisan Budaya Malaysia). These topics challenge the maturity, creativity and imagination of the youngsters. The annual competition is open to Malaysia public secondary school students who are in Form 4 to Form 6 as well as students in Chinese independent school from Senior Middle 1 to Senior Middle 3. United Overseas Bank (UOB) has been a pillar of support towards this competition for the last seven years. This year UOB sponsored a total of RM10,000 cash prize for the scholarship winners.

Founded in 1967 as a non-profit institution, MIA has produced thousands of professional artists, designers and musicians for the creative industry. Today, the Institute offers a range of other Diploma courses in the field of art, design and music including Illustration, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Textile & Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Fine Art and Music with comprehensive and well-designed course contents. All the courses offered are accredited by Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA).

MIA is now open for its new intake which commences on 22 August 2016. For the convenience of parents and students, MIA will extend its weekend counselling hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 – 27 August 2016.
