Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) will be organizing the third edition of its annual Mathematics and Science Quiz on 20 May 2017, with the quiz running concurrently at its Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor, and Sabah campuses. Building on the success of the first two quizzes held at the Kuala Lumpur Main Campus, this year’s quiz is expanding its reach to allow more students from across the country to participate and prove their mettle. With the branch campuses on board and against the backdrop of the 60th Merdeka celebrations, the quiz has been aptly named the ‘National M@S Merdeka Challenge 2017’.

Since its inception in 2015 with 116 participants from 17 Klang Valley and Seremban schools, the maths and science quiz has continued to be well-received as evidenced by the increased participation every year. The quiz is part of TAR UC’s endeavour to stimulate interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields among secondary school students, and to support the STEM initiative as promulgated in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025. This is in line with Malaysia’s aspiration to become a developed nation with a STEM-driven economy.

This year’s competition will have two categories namely the Team category and Individual category where all participants must be below 18 years old. Each team in the Team category must consist of four students. The Individual category is introduced this year to enable students who are unable to form a team in their schools to participate. A registration fee of RM20 per team for the Team Category and RM5 per participant for the Individual category will be charged and can be paid by cash on the competition day.

The competition is divided into two rounds. In the paper-based preliminary round, all participants are required to answer multiple choice questions which cover the SPM Form 4 Additional Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects in 45 minutes. The top ten teams and top ten individual participants with the highest scores will proceed to the final round.

The final round is a computer-based quiz and the finalists will be required to answer multiple choice questions taken from SPM Form 4 Additional Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects within 30 minutes. All questions for both rounds are in English.

Ms Looi Li Chin, the Head of TAR UC’s Centre for Pre-University Studies is very excited about the competition as she says: “I would like to encourage schools and institutions of learning to send their students to participate as this is a good opportunity for them to pit their mathematical prowess against one another in solving challenging math and science questions. We have also prepared various activities to let participants experience interesting and engaging aspects of math and science.”

Invitation letters together with the registration forms have been sent to schools and tuition centres. The deadline to register is 28 April 2017. Completed registration forms can be faxed to 603-41423166 or the scanned copy of the completed registration form can be sent to either one of the email addresses below:
