Bridging English and leadership

A camp organized by DISTED College afforded a mind-broadening opportunity for lower secondary school students to hone their English and leadership skills the fun way, which also impressed on them the importance of soft skills in carving a niche in life and career.

Held recently at the college, the 3-day English Camp saw 38 participants, comprising mainly Form 1 to Form 4 students, basking in an exciting time of English practice and leadership inculcation activities, which included a workshop on honing effective communication and inter-personal skills, and a lyrical dance of expressing body movements through combining music, lyrics and emotions.

Participant Phuah Rou said: “The exciting team activities gave me numerous opportunities to practise English.”

“I learnt to use English meaningfully when discussing group projects with my peers,” said the Form 3 student. 

Form 2 student Lim Bao Hao commented: “Improving the ability to deal with people is important too for my future apart from having a good command of English.”

“Leadership skills can be used in daily life such as in extracurricular activities at school,” he said. 

DISTED School of English and General Studies programme coordinator Vilashini Kandaiah said: “The camp engaged the participants in communicational English through active collaborative learning activities that also refined their leadership qualities.”

“With good English and leadership skills, the students are better prepared to face the challenges in the workplace and the society in future,” she remarked.
