Released on 27 Feb, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 showcases a ranking of 1,200 of the world’s universities from 78 countries. Its rankings include a total of 48 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas – Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. The rankings are carried out based on a methodology which assesses each school on factors such as academic and employer reputations. Research citations, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics are also used to rank the universities.
Overall, most subjects recorded a lower ranking than last year with only four Malaysian departments ranking among the top 50 in the world for their subject. In 2018, nine departments made it to the top 50 in the world. The four subjects with top 50 ranking are:
Development Studies | Universiti Malaya (UM) | 38 |
Electrical and Electronic Engineering | Universiti Malaya (UM) | 47 |
Hospitality and Leisure Management | Taylor’s University | 14 |
Library and Information Management | Universiti Malaya (UM) | =31 |
Although 157 Malaysian university departments were ranked, only 26 made it into the top 100. This was evident in the individual department rankings which showed that only 11 departments had better rankings whereas a drop in position was recorded in 76 departments this year.
Out of the 48 specific subjects, five public universities – IIUM, UM, UPM, USM and UTM – and two private universities, Taylor’s University and UCSI, were ranked among the top 100 across 20 subjects.
