Institution Profile

Background

UCSI Active Learning Classroom

UCSI University is one of Malaysia’s best private universities. The University opens doors for thousands of students each year and supplies the human capital that meets – and exceeds – the demands of the Malaysian economy and the global market.

Academic diversity is one of UCSI’s strongest points. The University offers an eclectic range of industry-acclaimed programmes in medicine, pharmacy, engineering, applied science, business, IT, architecture, social science, music, tourism management, creative arts and design at its campuses in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kuala Terengganu.

The University’s excellent record in teaching and learning is increasingly complemented by its research output. UCSI’s top medical and engineering students have been selected to pursue cutting-edge research at Harvard University, Imperial College London and Tsinghua University. More arrangements with collaborative partners in the Ivy League, Russell Group, Universitas 21 and Australia’s Group of Eight are also in the pipeline.

UCSI Advanced Chemical Engineering Lab

By partnering over 3,500 global companies, UCSI runs what is virtually Malaysia’s widest university-industry network. This unique setup sees UCSI students benefiting from structured internship programmes, technology transfers, joint research arrangements and job opportunities. Internships abroad are becoming increasingly common and UCSI students have worked at leading companies in Britain, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, among other nations. UCSI students go for internships for at least two months each year and the University enjoys one of the highest graduate employment rates in Malaysia.

Internationalisation is another key focus at UCSI. Students from more than 110 countries study here, making the University a vibrant melting pot of culture and diversity. Exchange programmes abound and more strategic tie-ups are being forged with leading universities in France and Ireland. With these unique strengths and more, UCSI stands out as a University that offers an education few can, provides experiences others can’t and delivers life-defining outcomes for students everywhere.

Academic Strength

UCSI Aquatic Lab

UCSI has made it a point to engage academics who are at the forefront of their disciplines. Today, 30% of UCSI’s academic staff possess a PhD – far higher than the 16% average at Malaysian private higher education institutions in 2015 – and a further 16.5% are pursuing their doctorate. These academics drive high impact research, winning research grants and securing research awards on the domestic and international front.

Programme Outline

UCSI currently has more than 100 programmes that encompass a wide range of fields – from medicine, applied sciences, engineering, social sciences, hospitality and tourism, business, and information technology, to name a few.
The majority of them carry recognition or accreditation from relevant professional bodies including ACCA, Board of Engineers Malaysia, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), CPA Australia, CIMA, ICAEW, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, Malaysia Nursing Board, Malaysian Pharmacy Board, Society of Actuaries, and many more.

Academic Facilities & Resources

UCSI Advanced Chemical Instrument Engineering Lab

UCSI University's campuses are purpose-built to provide students with all the facilities they need for learning and recreation. Apart from being fully wireless, the University also adopts the latest cutting-edge technology in e-learning and e-resources, and is also home to a number of specialised laboratories. The University also houses recreational facilities such as restaurants, squash courts, badminton courts, a football field, a gymnasium, volleyball courts, basketball courts, a futsal court and a swimming pool.

UCSI is also expanding its operational space by around 1mil square feet through the construction of two new academic blocks at UCSI’s main campus in Kuala Lumpur. The new blocks will house state-of-the-art science labs, distinctive lecture theatres, commercial areas and a multi-level parking facility, among others. Additionally, UCSI is building Malaysia’s first private teaching hospital in Springhill, Negeri Sembilan, which will house 1,000 beds when fully expanded.

Student Support Services & Student Development Activities

UCSI Study Room

Students can participate and socialise with their peers through a host of clubs and student associations at the University. Currently, there are more than 70 student clubs and associations – such as course-related clubs, sports and recreational, cultural societies, self-defense groups, religious fellowships and international student associations. Transcending classroom borders, the events provide the ideal platform for students to gain practical experience and develop their leadership skills and character.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

In conjunction with its 30th anniversary, UCSI is offering up to RM30million in scholarships and grants in 2016. This goes far in reinforcing the University’s mission to enhance access to higher education for deserving students, regardless of circumstance or family background. Thousands of students have benefited from UCSI’s generous financial support from day one. Many have gone on to achieve great things in life and the University is gratified to help them fulfil their potential.

Student Testimonials

Anusha Arulnanthi

BA (Hons) Music

Been in Sedaya from August 96 till August 99. Through the years, Sedaya's standard has improved tremendously. As a student from the Music department, I must say that the facilities such as the practice rooms are good. The lecture rooms are cosy. The lecturers are excellent at what they do and they are the people I would remember always for bringing me to the level that I am at now. Sedaya College is certainly the best place in Malaysia for anyone wanting to pursue a good music education.

V. Jadish Kumar

BEng (Hons) Communication and Electronic Engineering (Alumni Student)

Sedaya College is a college that knows no bounds in education heights. Beginning with the lecturers, students and other staff who dedicate themselves to excellence, dynamism, professionalism and innovation to achieve total student satisfaction. All its facilities are up-to-date and the entire atmosphere of the college lets the students live in actual college lifestyle. The libraries are quiet, excellent for studies and reference, computer laboratories are well-equipped and the lecture theatres are spacious and air-conditioned for a conducive study environment. All in all, Sedaya College gives its students the best education that is available now and will always be here providing education to those who need it.

Alexandra Sader, Uruguay

Mass Communications, 3 years

The environment in UCSI is good and I’m comfortable with it. People here are nice and friendly and the lecturers are excellent. They are really concerned about their students and help them willingly. I experienced some cultural shock at the beginning but somehow I managed to adapt myself in Malaysia. It is fun to be in Malaysia; the food and weather are fantastic.

Armita Eftekhar, Iran

B. A. (Hons.) in Business Administration

I decided to study in Malaysia because it is an Asian country where it is easy to mix and adapt with the people and the culture here. My friends recommended UCSI because it is a good university. UCSI has a few intakes a year and it is very convenient for students to enrol at anytime of the year. UCSI has a warm and friendly environment for students and the lecturers are good.

Cady Jiang Xue-yan, Hangzhou, China

Nursing (University of Northumbria, Newcastle, UK)

".... Malaysian people are so friendly...."Ms. Cady Jiang Xue-yan who comes from Hangzhou (China) is a nurse by profession there too. Being an excellent student, she won Sedaya College's President's Award (worth RM800) for the year 1997/98. After completing some courses at Sedaya College, she managed to secure an offer in late 1998 from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle (UNN), UK to complete a degree in Nursing."I feel sad to leave Malaysia as I have made so many friends here already. Malaysian people are so friendly. I will definitely come back to visit my Sedayan friends and other Malaysian friends whom I have met during my stay here." ( With these parting words, she left for UNN, UK 1998.)

Fatimah Qari, Saudi Arabia

B.Sc. Computing for Business, 3 Years

Studying and living in Malaysia, within an environment amidst a plethora of colourful people from different ethnic origins has provided me with the opportunity to gain a greater insight on the different cultural backgrounds. UCSI is very much like a little global village! There are international students from so many different countries - Vietnam, Pakistan, China, Mauritius, Maldives, and even from Saudi Arabia! The programmes on offer are excellent alternatives to studying abroad in other countries.

Grace Onyango, Kenya

B.Eng Electrical & Electronics Engineering, 3 Years

I chose to study in Malaysia because it is definitely a cheaper alternative than to study at other common academic destinations like the UK or the US. I am also curious to explore the experience of studying in Asia. Now that I’m here, I truly appreciate the mix of cultures, the easy-going and laid back attitude of Malaysians and generally, they are very friendly and hospitable people. I chose UCSI because I met one of the College’s representatives at an educational fair in Nairobi and the academic options here are more attractive than others.

Ha Thi Huyen Trang, Vietnam

Business Information System, 2nd year

Malaysia is beautiful and Malaysians are friendly. If my country people had the chance to travel, they should visit Malaysia to feel for themselves how beautiful this country is. Vietnamese people like to say Khi ta o chi la noi dat o, khi ta di dat bong hoa tam hon, which means that a place is just to stay in until it is time to leave, and then it becomes your soul. Now that I will be leaving Malaysia soon, I really understand what that means!

Jhony Kosasim, Indonesia

Accounting & Finance, 3 years

I came to UCSI to further my studies because there was an agent in my country who recommended this college to me. I found that it is fun and enjoyable to be with friends from different countries, religions and backgrounds. Malaysians are “OK” and friendly. Frankly speaking, I did not experience any cultural shock as Malaysia and Indonesia have a lot of similarities in terms of food, weather and culture.

Besides being friendly and extremely helpful, the lecturers at UCSI are always looking for opportunities to improve themselves. UCSI provides us with a supportive and stimulating study environment where I can interact with friends from different walks of life. We also get to enjoy facilities that benefit students such sports, societies, accommodation, student services, scholarships, teaching, learning and research. The counselors at the counselor center are also always willing to help.

After two years of staying in Malaysia, I find that this country very beautiful. I also find that the lecturers are very helpful and they are willing to take the extra mile to help us with our studies. The Student Council has been very supportive of our international student activities, giving us a lot of moral support. Although I was the first student from Kerala, now, there are more than 20 students from my hometown.

UCSI University is a melting pot for different cultures to mix and learn about each other. These people are not only from Asia but also from European, Middle Eastern and African countries like Russia, Iran and Nigeria. So far, I have met people of different cultures and learned about their ways of life and the way things are done in their country such their annual festivals and other ceremonies. Apart from that, we also have a diversified range of lecturers from countries like Singapore, Iran and Indonesia. They are very friendly and helpful. Personally, I’ve gained more experience by participating and helping out in events organised by the clubs and associations. Campus life is incomplete without the extracurricular activities and it will definitely prove to be helpful when my future career starts.

Mahendra Sidik, Indonesia

Masters in Logistics Management

I chose this course because it is a one-year Masters programme and is incorporated with the Co-Op education programme (internship). This means that I can work and be involved directly in the industry. At the same time, I could also attend lectures in the evening at the university after my Co-Op. I also like the programme because it is well-organised and there is a dedicated administrative offi cer co-ordinating the programme. We can always obtain any required assistance from the officer concerning our studies. Besides this, I also like the food in Malaysia.

Being in Kuala Lumpur is nothing like I’ve seen in my country! I like the hot weather all year round, and enjoy the nature, as well as the metropolitan aspects of the city - the buildings, trains and definitely the cheerful people.

I found the e-learning facilities in campus (Sedaya International College is an e-campus) very useful. It is practical and easy to use because it is there 24 hours and I can access it at night. I study at night because there are extra-curricular activities like basketball, student council meetings and movies on Friday during the day. Besides, all lecture notes, tutorials, the timetable… everything, they are all there. The staff, too, are approachable, compared to back in my school. The environment is conductive and I had no problem with any lecturer. I didn’t come under any academic sanction, and the college has sports facilities like basketball courts and the gymnasium, which I am addicted to. I like basketball and the gym! The social life here is great. I met people from different cultures, and they have given me an insight into other ways of life. I made numerous friends. When I walk into the college lobby, it is like I know everybody! One of the most memorable events of college life was the overnight basketball tournament, which was held recently. It was from 7pm to 11am. We didn’t sleep. There was only an hour break in between games. This was the first time I heard of it. Never heard anything like it! I felt good! The most important thing I’ll take away with me from Sedaya International College is my friendship and the people who respect me in a big way. I expected to be discriminated against in some way here but it is not happening.

Muhammad Tawfiq Peerbocus, Mauritius

B. Sc. (Hons.) Engineering (Mechanical)

I arrived in Malaysia in January 2003 and met UCSI University, my surrogate home for the following 1 year and 8 months.

I was at UCSI to fulfill my dream to be a Mechanical Engineer. I was surprised at how fond I became of UCSI and its melting pot of students and staff. After graduating from UCSI, I pursued my degree at the University of Manitoba, Canada and aside from receiving a distinction in my field of study, I also received the Gold Award from The Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME).

My UCSI experience was not all about books, equations or libraries but it was also about my everyday life, my habits and about communicating and sharing ideas with great people all the time. UCSI has become my way of life, and will remain part of my life and heart.

Navid Gazerani, Iran

B.A. (Hons.) in Computing, 3 Years

UCSI University is the only university in KL which offers a variety of different courses. One of the reasons I chose this University is because you can find different cultures from different countries and nations. This gives me an opportunity to learn different cultures from different countries. The relationship among UCSI University students and Student Affairs staff was the best I had experienced in my University life. I learned a lot from them through organising events. I strongly believe that UCSI University can lead me to a bright future.

"My dream of studying in the UK was realised when I got to know about Sedaya College's joint program in Engineering with the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK."Currently, I am undertaking the '3+0' Communication and Electronic Engineering program. Originally, I had plans to study at a British university. However, I did not want to "burden" my family financially. My dream of studying in the UK was realised when I got to know about Sedaya College's joint program in Engineering with the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK. In this way, I am able to save a substantial sum of money. I will proceed to this UK University in the final year.(Explanatory note: 3+0 programme is a foreign university degree programme whereby students can complete the entire course in Malaysia"
