Institution Overview

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) or The Energy University is a private university with Government-Link University (GLU) status, wholly owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). UNITEN operates on two campuses; the main campus is in Putrajaya, and the branch campus is in Bandar Muadzam Shah, Pahang.

Programmes offered by UNITEN are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Courses offered are in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Economics, Energy Economics, Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Entrepreneurship and Business.

UNITEN is the first Energy University in Malaysia that aspires to become a globally competitive energy-focused university by embodying the best of Malaysian and Asian university traditions. It is known as a serious player in the academic world with its vision to be a leading global energy university that shapes a sustainable future. This is proven through its top academic excellence achievements.

Over the past years, the world has witnessed the stunning transformation of UNITEN in pursuit of academic excellence, which has improved its reputation. UNITEN has achieved five stars (Excellent) in the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA) since 2017. UNITEN has also been granted Self-Accreditation Assessment, which serves as a testament to a reliable quality assurance system in place within UNITEN to systematically review its own academic programmes. Obtaining this Self-Accreditation Status implies the empowerment and trust placed upon UNITEN by MQA to certify its own courses.

The university has improved its standing in university rankings. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, UNITEN is ranked #144 in 2023. UNITEN has also been recognized for its outstanding achievements in the Engineering and Technology subject, as well as in the Engineering - Electrical and Electronic subject category. UNITEN is ranked #451-500 in Engineering and Technology and #301-350 in the Engineering - Electrical and Electronic category, placing it among some of the most esteemed institutions in the world. In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022, UNITEN is ranked #801-1000 among the world's best universities. In Malaysia, UNITEN is ranked as the 2nd private university and in the Top 10 overall.

Since the establishment of UNITEN in 1997, UNITEN has generated more than 39000 graduates. The fully accredited and recognized academic programmes, coupled with holistic and engaging student activities substantiate that the university is able to produce outstanding and well-rounded graduates. These have enhanced graduates’ employability to 96.8% in 2023. 

UNITEN alumni network spreads over almost 70 countries worldwide and serves at all levels in both technical and management capacity and as academic/researcher.  Some of the graduates are holding high positions in various international companies such as SHELL, Schlumberger, ExxonMobil, EY, Baker Hughes, GE, Petronas, etc. Over the last two decades, more than 1800 international alumni have graduated from UNITEN.
