Course Overview
The programme consists of a minimum of 8 semesters where fundamentals of engineering and polymer engineering subjects are taught. The polymer-engineering component is progressively increased as the students move into the higher level of study. A number of ancillary courses are also introduced with the aim of enhancing the engineering and management knowledge of the students.
Every student is also required to undergo a minimum of ten weeks of industrial training at the end of the third year. The training is designed to expose students to the industrial environment which should benefit them in their later careers. Also, a final year research project is included in the curriculum.
Each student is assigned to an academic advisor to advice on the selection of courses for every semester to meet individual needs and other related matters. A staff/student committee is established to seek solutions to problems with a view to improve the teaching and learning process and to strengthen the bond between the lecturers and students.
Curriculum
Year 1: Basic mathematics, science, mechanics, and computing tools, including introductions to engineering and engineering drawing, basic mathematics/statistics, basic science, and courses in engineering science.
Year 2: More focused courses related to polymer engineering fundamentals were introduced to students. These courses consist of both theoretical deliveries and experimental exposures.
Year 3: In-depth coverage of polymer engineering fundamentals in the current focus areas (polymer processing engineering, polymer degradation and environment, advanced polymer composites), and more supporting courses (more laboratory practices and site visits). Students introduced with technical electives additional knowledge in some supplementary required subjects such as semiconductor fabrication, engineering management, occupational safety and health, etc.
Year 4: More technical core and elective courses that provide more depth in the disciplines such as product design and failure analysis, mould and die design, rubber engineering to name a few; as requirements to fulfill the students’ professional competency.
