Institution Overview

About the Institution

DRB-HICOM University of Automotive Malaysia (DRBHU) was established on April 2, 2010, as the International College of Automotive (ICAM) with only 42 students from DRB-HICOM Berhad subsidiary companies' employees to begin with, and it became a full-fledged university in October 2015. DRBHU is owned by HICOM University College Sdn. Bhd (HUCSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of DRB-HICOM Berhad. The university is located on a 42-acre site within the DRB-HICOM Automotive Complex in Pekan, Pahang.

The university’s tagline, “University by the industry, for the industry," embodies its commitment to producing skilled professionals for the workforce and educating and upgrading the skills and knowledge of DRB-HICOM Group's staff through a curriculum that blends theory with practical application. Currently, the university offers more than 20 programs, including foundation, diploma, degree, master's, and doctoral studies, mainly through two faculties: the Faculty of Engineering & Technology and the Faculty of Business & Management. The university also offers a variety of Open Distance Learning (ODL) programs such as Diploma in Procurement, Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health, Master of Business Administration, and Doctor of Business Administration.

DRB-HICOM is the largest fully integrated automotive corporation in the country, involved in numerous automotive supply chain activities, including manufacturing automotive components, vehicle assembly and distribution, after-sales support and services, and vehicle inspection. Companies within the DRB-HICOM Group have collaborated with international automotive players such as Audi, Honda, Isuzu, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen.

DRBHU serves two major roles: acting as a private educational institution that produces skilled professionals for the automotive sector workforce and enabling workers within the DRB-HICOM Group of Companies to continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge. Complementing the automotive industry through sustainable development of human capital is the primary goal of DRB-HICOM University of Automotive Malaysia. With the change to university status, DRBHU is now equipped to undertake research at the international level. The focus of teaching has broadened to include all aspects of automotive-related education and research.

The university plays an active role in the Group’s vision of realizing the national aspiration of creating a knowledgeable and skilled workforce. The continuous flow of trained and skilled workers benefits the Malaysian automotive industry. This vision includes the goal of making Pekan, the home of DRBHU and the DRB-HICOM automotive complex, a vibrant and self-sustaining regional automotive center housing state-of-the-art technology with a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and professional workforce.

Academic Resources and Facilities

DRB-HICOM University of Automotive Malaysia (DRBHU) is a boutique university situated in Pekan’s automotive industrial park. This young university is steadily growing with a clear vision to become ASEAN’s premier innovation, research, and educational institution for the automotive ecosystem and sustainable development. The university upholds the moral obligation to provide an excellent teaching and learning experience for our students in preparing them for their future. At the same time, DRBHU also endorses its supportive role in the community of Pekan.

In ensuring the quality of our courses through student evaluations for all subjects in every semester, lecturers and students provide feedback on the effectiveness of the teaching methodology and the practicality of the course itself. We encourage classes to be interactive and offer real-life challenges that require problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Another initiative is to expose academicians to an annual 360-degree feedback on their teaching and learning aspects, where they receive constructive evaluations from their peers and immediate supervisors.

Teaching methodology has shifted from pedagogy to andragogy (student-centered) and towards heutagogy, in tandem with the contemporary changes in education progress and development. Academicians are expected to use teaching methodology consistent with Education 4.0, utilizing digital media tools and global education platforms. Student assessments are set on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and industry-based experiential learning, thereby aligning with the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025, consisting of six basic attributes: ethics and spirituality, leadership skills, national identity, language proficiency, thinking skills, and knowledge.

Along with teaching and learning, continuous professional development is also of high priority at DRBHU. As such, the university is responsible for providing guidance and support for effective teaching and evaluation of students. To meet this objective, we are involved in academic induction, assessment handbooks for educators, teaching and learning policies, trainings, workshops, and informal sharing sessions for educators to upgrade their skills in teaching and learning matters. We often invite prominent trainers from reputed universities, professional boards, MQA-approved members, and, most importantly, members from the industry to support our various activities.

DRBHU is indeed a committed learning organization, promoting continuous personal and professional development of its students, educators, staff, and the members of the wider community at large.
