Tan Sin Yee could not believe her luck when she received a scholarship to the United Kingdom, to complete the final year of her BA (Hons) in Accounting and Financial Management Studies at the University of Gloucestershire. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, offered by Yayasan PKT/PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd was part of an RM1mil scholarship fund given out to eligible students that showed exemplary performance.
The 24-year-old accountant, who took on accounting and financial management out of her love for numbers and analytical thinking, said that the opportunity to study overseas enabled her to gain valuable experiences through international exposure.
“The lecturers there treat us as friends. They care about us and the progress that we make. Each student is assigned a personal tutor, who is in charge of providing guidance, advice and support for our studies,” she shared.
Aside from academic pursuits, Tan highlighted cultural exchange as a vital part of studying overseas. Despite the initial culture shock, she learnt to step out of her comfort zone and socialise to make friends with peers from different backgrounds and countries.
She added, “I met new friends from Thailand, Indonesia, China, Nepal and other European countries during my studies there. It was very interesting to understand and observe their way of thinking and learning.” Among her most memorable experiences in the UK was working part-time as a retail assistant selling perfume in a shopping mall and as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant, which provided an insight into the working culture there.
The working experience was a natural continuation of her time studying in Peninsula College. Among the first students studying at the college, Tan was also one of the first students to participate in PKT Logistics Group’s Jom Bekerja Sambil Bekerja (JBSB).
The programme, which saw her working in the logistics group’s various departments such as warehouse, IT, accounting and the front desk, enabled her to not only gain hands-on experience while balancing studying, but also secure an allowance to help fund her undergraduate degree.
“JBSB taught me a lot and I gained industry exposure. It helped me to improve my time management and most importantly, my communication skills in terms of the soft skills at the workplace such as interpersonal communication and relationship management,” she said.
Recounting her memorable experience in Peninsula College, Tan said what she liked was the smaller class sizes, which meant that there was frequent interaction between lecturers and students. She opines, “This helps give students an opportunity to speak up and express our views in class with lecturers during discussion, which is important to build our confidence level.”
In terms of extra-curricular endeavours, her favourite student activities were those organised to foster bonding and engagement such as bowling tournaments, reason being that it helped build up teamwork and a sense of camaraderie between students.
After excelling in her studies at Peninsula College, which places emphasis on graduate employability, Tan was offered a role at PKT Logistics Group’s finance department, where she now works. She attributes her smooth journey thus far to Peninsula College and PKT Logistics Group for creating a holistic ecosystem that enables students to be industry-ready graduates by fostering technical knowledge in tandem with soft skills, as well as gaining industry experience and international exposure. “My advice to others is that nothing comes easy in life, it is not often you get such an opportunity to study in the UK with a scholarship,” she said.
