Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI)

Institution Overview

Background

Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has a long distinguished history beginning with its establishment in 1922 as the Sultan Idris Training College (SITC). Designed to provide teacher training and education to only the highest achieving Malay students in pre-independent Malaya, the college, which was the brainchild of the then Deputy Director of Malay schools, Sir Richard Windstedt, grew in strength and was widely known in the region for its scholarly tradition. Not surprisingly, the college produced the best of Malay educators, linguists, writers and journalists.

In 1957, when Malaysia gained its independence, the college was renamed Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI). On 1 May 1997, the Minister of Education announced the establishment of the first university of education in the country, to be named Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris based on Government gazette P.U. (A) 132 & 133 dated 24 February 1997 under the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Corporation) and the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Campus) 1997.

Student Support Services & Student Development Activities

Ten modern, well-equipped residence halls, each able to accommodate 300 students have been built on the new Sultan Azlan Shah Campus. In addition, accommodation is also provided for about 600 students on the present campus. Throughout the academic year there is a shuttle bus service to help students commute between the two campuses. Under a special rental scheme, the university also assists students in obtaining suitable off-campus housing. Other than a large playing field, the university is justifiably proud of its modern gymnasium, tennis courts, cafeterias, computing services centre and a nursery.

There is a music and arts complex that combines the functions of a studio, art laboratory and workshop. Counselling services are made readily available to both graduate and undergraduate students. For international students, academic and non-academic advise is provided on an individual basis. Additionally, Tanjong Malim's main mosque is only a walking distance from the campus. The UPSI library inherited a vast collection of books, including some rare books and manuscripts, from UPSI. Now that the permanent library building is completed, the library is on par with any other modern library in the world.

Career counselling and guidance can be provided while more complicated students' cases will be referred to community organisations, police and courts, depending on the severity of the case.
